Chart selection

Finding the right visualization to display data can be overwhelming. This page will help you select a chart or diagram that best fits your use case, so it correctly conveys the story you want to tell.

Category comparison

These charts compare data between multiple distinct categories. Categories can be animals, countries, sports, and so forth.

  • Bar chart: use it to display quantitative values for different categories. For example: Rescued cats in Europe
  • Grouped bar chart: use it when comparing two or more data sets grouped together under different categories. For example: Rescued cats, dogs & birds in Europe
  • Stacked bar chart: use it to display a part-to-whole breakdown of quantitative values for different categories. The whole could represent 100% or an absolute value. For example: Rescued animals (cats, dogs & birds) in Europe

Change over time

These charts show data over a period of time, such as trends across different categories during a time period.

  • Line chart: use it to show high-level trends and patterns, without displaying exact values. For example: Rescued animals in 2021
  • Sparkline chart: use it to show changes in value, without displaying exact values. For example: Rescued animal trends in 2021
  • Bar chart: use it to display quantitative values for different categories. For example: Rescued cats in 2021

These charts show how a large category is divided into smaller categories, and the relationship between parts as well as on the total.

  • Stacked bar chart: use it to display a part-to-whole breakdown of quantitative values for different categories. The whole could represent 100% or an absolute value. For example: Rescued animals (cats, dogs & birds) in Europe
