Category comparison
These charts compare data between multiple distinct categories. Categories can be animals, countries, sports, and so forth.
- Bar chart: use it to display quantitative values for different categories. For example: Rescued cats in Europe
- Grouped bar chart: use it when comparing two or more data sets grouped together under different categories. For example: Rescued cats, dogs & birds in Europe
- Stacked bar chart: use it to display a part-to-whole breakdown of quantitative values for different categories. The whole could represent 100% or an absolute value. For example: Rescued animals (cats, dogs & birds) in Europe
Change over time
These charts show data over a period of time, such as trends across different categories during a time period.
- Line chart: use it to show high-level trends and patterns, without displaying exact values. For example: Rescued animals in 2021
- Sparkline chart: use it to show changes in value, without displaying exact values. For example: Rescued animal trends in 2021
- Bar chart: use it to display quantitative values for different categories. For example: Rescued cats in 2021
Part-to-whole
These charts show how a large category is divided into smaller categories, and the relationship between parts as well as on the total.
- Stacked bar chart: use it to display a part-to-whole breakdown of quantitative values for different categories. The whole could represent 100% or an absolute value. For example: Rescued animals (cats, dogs & birds) in Europe
Flow
These diagrams show the movement of data between multiple states.
- Alluvial diagram: use this to display changes in a structure or flow.
